Hailing from Toronto, Mattie Leon is a singer/songwriter whose music strikes a beautiful balance between Folk/R&B and Pop. 2019 will see the release of “WHEN LOVE IS STRONG / CAUGHT UP”, a two song single that returns Leon to the R&B roots he cultivated on his debut EP, TERRACE. It’s the first release since 2017’s SIGNAL HILL; a 7-song collection of rhythmic Canadiana that landed Leon a nomination for Emerging Artist at the 2018 Canadian Folk Music Awards. Canadian Beats said the record is "Full of emotion and passion" and that "Mattie Leon is onto something brilliant".
Since embarking on his solo career in 2015 Mattie has been busy producing and releasing music, playing throughout Ontario and touring Canada. His soulful debut EP, TERRACE, included the song JUST YOU that received airplay on CBC Radio 1 and garnered accolades from then host, Talia Schlanger. He followed up TERRACE with two small releases in 2016 that included standout track ALABAMA which was his first foray into historical material. The song is about Clifford Durr, civil rights lawyer in the 1950's and 60's, who assisted in bailing Rosa Parks out of jail after the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
As SIGNAL HILL continues to get play on Canadian College Radio, songs from the record have also been featured on CBC’s new web series PEOPLE WATCHING. In the last few years Mattie has had songs receive national radio play, has opened for national acts like Jared and The Mill, Scenic Route To Alaska, and Wild Rivers, played showcases at Canadian Music Week, received an Arts Acclaim Award from The City of Brampton, toured from coast to coast (Summer of 2018) and has been featured/interviewed on countless radio shows and podcasts including CBC Radio 1's Fresh Air and Humble and Fred.
With momentum building Mattie is quickly becoming an artist with promise on the Canadian musical landscape.
WHEN LOVE IS STRONG / CAUGHT UP will be followed up with an East Coast summer tour in 2019 and a full record in the winter.
